Throughout the years of running my handyman business I’ve had a chance to try out a lot of different marketing methods. Some have worked out good and others have just flat out flopped. I think you’ll agree with me that no one really wants to spend money on advertising. You do it because you have to right?

Well, I’ve always tried to find the least expensive ways to bring in the most business. One of them which you might already know is Google Places. If you can show up in the top 3 spots for your area your Places listing can bring in a decent amount of business. It’s also free.

It’s always nice to be able to get business free or at least very cheap. I’ve tried many marketing methods, though most have not proven very profitable, one stands out among them that has blown away every single other. It’s a website. My website costs very little to run and maintain and it’s responsible for bringing in the vast majority of my business; much more than any other marketing method I use.

The importance of a website

Most handymen don’t understand the importance of a website. I know this because I talk to a lot of them all the time. You might also be one of them. I suppose you can’t really understand the importance until you actually see the results that it can produce. Once I saw that my website was bringing in practically all of my business I stopped chasing after all these other marketing and advertising opportunities out there. I started to make my website even better so it could be even more effective. I added reviews and a quote request form. I tried out different things to increase the leads I was getting.

A website is so valuable to your handyman business because you control everything about it. You control the content, the reviews that are posted, everything. This is really the only marketing and advertising method that you can control every aspect of.

It’s not magic. There are certain things that make it work

You cannot expect to throw up any website on the internet and think that it will automatically start bringing in customers. This is something that I see all the time. I’ll get emails from handymen just like you that tell me they are struggling to get business. They tell me they have tried many different things and nothings working. They even tell me that they have a website but aren’t getting any business from it.

I kindly ask for a link to the website and right away I can see why they aren’t getting any business from it. This stuff isn’t magic.
